Review of current science education approaches in relation to national and international curriculum documents. Methods, strategies, and materials for conceptual learning along with skill development. Understanding nature of science from a broader perspective. Asking questions about natural and social phenomena, using various ways of investigations, reaching evidence-based arguments, evaluating arguments.

Review of learning theories for teaching mathematics in developmentally appropriate ways. Numbers and operations, geometry, measurement, data handling, and introduction to patterns and algebra. Reasoning and mathematical thinking. Problem solving.

Stages of reading development and theories. Characteristics of beginning, proficient, and advanced readers. Interrelations among orthographic, phonological, semantic, and contextual processing in word recognition, reading fluency, and comprehension. The importance of fluency to reading comprehension. The relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension and fluency. Characteristics of struggling readers. Word reading, reading comprehension and fluency strategies for diverse students.

Characteristics of students with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Causes of LD and ADHD. Types of LDs with a special focus on dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia. Strategies to cope with the consequences of LDs and ADHD.  Classroom accommodations and teaching techniques to enhance the academic abilities of students with LD/ ADHD.
